Rough sketches of front cover and contents page




These are my very rough designs for my front cover and contents page.
The title of my school magazine will be success, it will be issue 1 as it is a brand new magazine, the price will be 50p.
The coverlines on my front cover will be:
Top Class, Top Ten Achievers Get A Suprise
School Dinners, Do You Eat Them?
School Uniform, The Big Debate
Art Competition
Win a chance to write a piece for this magazine.

My rough contents page it gives you an idea of where everything will be. It tells you it is the contents page, it shows you the columns and the layout. It also shows you were the pictures and editor's letter will go.

Codes and conventions of a contents page

  • Different sections and subtitles.
  • Pictures linking to different articles.
  • Name of magazine - easily indentified.
  • Numbered articles - grouped into topics or ordered - organised.
  • Captions by pictures.
  • Little pictures of different stories than on the front cover to attract different audiences.
  • Contrasting colours - colour scheme not always same as front cover.
  • Plain background.
  • Date and issue.
  • Website address.
  • Connects with the front cover - small copy of the front cover.
  • Editoral to involve audience.
  • 2-3 different fonts on the page.
  • Competitions.

Codes and conventions of a magazine front cover

  • Similarities in content and design.
  • Mast-head in different font and bigger than anything else.
  • Mast-head in top left hand corner (when magazine is well known the mast-head can be overlapped with the main image.
  • Most of the main images are people that are easily recognisable to the audience or someone who reflects the target audience.
  • Central image relates to genre.
  • Biggest cover line line linking to the main picture.
  • Little pictures - sub stories/feature articles (about 6-10).
  • A bar code is present.
  • Buzzwords are used, e.g. plus, free.
  • Price and issue.
  • Tag lines.
  • Colour theme - recognisable- attract all audiences, limited colour - cost issue.
  • Interviews.
  • 2-3 different fonts over the whole page - mast-head in a separate font.
  • Banners -with summary.
  • Website address.
